# Improving Steel Coil Inspection and Code Recognition

By [JAI](https://news.jai.com/blog/author/jai) | June 9, 2026

In steel manufacturing plants and railway freight yards, inspection of steel coil end-face quality and coil code recognition have traditionally relied on manual processes. Workers are required to approach high-temperature steel coils and inspect defects such as edge damage, burrs, end cracks and loose coils one by one under harsh working conditions with heavy dust and excessive noise, as well as manually record steel coil codes.

Key Challenges of the Current Inspection Process:

Insufficient timely inspection: Manual inspection cannot achieve full coverage, making it easy to miss occasional defects and resulting in batch quality problems flowing into downstream processes.

Potential safety hazards: The high-temperature and high-dust working environment poses a direct threat to personnel safety and health.

Difficult information traceability: As the unique identification of steel coils, coil numbers are prone to manual entry errors and difficult statistical management, which hinders logistics monitoring and overall management efficiency.

Challenges in Steel Coil Code Recognition

Steel coil codes are usually embossed or spray-printed on the edge of the coil end face, and their recognition faces the following challenges:

- Varying character positions and font styles
- Scale, oil contamination and water stains on steel coil surfaces
- Complex lighting conditions with severe interference from reflection and shadows

Therefore, an effective inspection solution must be collaboratively designed in three dimensions: imaging resolution, illumination and environmental protection.

Recommended Solution

To address these challenges, system integrators and equipment manufacturers can develop steel coil end face inspection solutions using high-performance [JAI Spark](https://www.jai.com/products/product-lines/spark-series-single-sensor-area-scan-high-performance/) series area scan cameras as the imaging component.

- High Resolution and Multi-camera Stitching

The diameter of a steel coil end face can exceed 2 meters, and a single camera cannot meet the requirements of both a large field of view and high resolution. Adopting partitioned imaging with multiple cameras and software image stitching, the system captures a complete end face image. Each pixel corresponds to an actual physical size of 0.1～0.3 mm, which is sufficient to identify millimeter-level defects and steel coil code characters.

- High-power Strobe Lighting

Continuous lighting is prone to light attenuation and equipment overheating in high-temperature environments. Strobe lights deliver high brightness at the moment of image capture, effectively overcoming metal surface reflection, scale shadows and other interferences. Meanwhile, it reduces overall heat generation and extends service life of equipment.

- Support for Automated Defect Detection

When integrated into a suitable inspection system with appropriate software and lighting, JAI cameras can provide the image quality required for detecting common defects such as edge damage, overlapping coil heads, end cracks, burrs, rolling tears, tower-shaped deformation, layer misalignment and edge overflow.

With optional extended modules, it can further inspect flat coils, collapsed inner coils and overlong dovetail defects, as well as measure inner diameter, outer diameter and coil width. It also supports coil number and label verification.

This approach enables multiple inspection tasks to be performed within a single system, supporting a wide range of application requirements.

- Protection Design for Harsh Operating Environments

High temperature, heavy dust and water vapor in hot-rolling production sites pose severe challenges to precision optical equipment. Industrial inspection systems deployed in hot-rolling environments often incorporate protective housings, cooling solutions, and dust protection measures to ensure reliable operation of cameras and other equipment. These measures are essential for ensuring reliable long-term operation in demanding industrial environments.

Recommendation: JAI Spark Series Area Scan Cameras

![04](https://news.jai.com/hs-fs/hubfs/04.png?width=1080&height=458&name=04.png)

Among camera models that meet the above requirements, the [JAI Spark series](https://www.jai.com/products/product-lines/spark-series-single-sensor-area-scan-high-performance/) area scan cameras deliver excellent technical compatibility and are highly suitable for this application.

- Next‑generation CMOS Sensor

Compared with traditional CCD sensors, operating speeds can be up to ten times faster. Meanwhile, technologies such as correlated double sampling (CDS), adaptive analog front‑end design and fixed-pattern noise correction are adopted to maintain low noise and a high dynamic range.

- Wide Range of High-Resolution Options

Resolution ranges from 5MP to 45MP. Models with 20 million pixels or above are recommended to meet the imaging precision requirement of 0.1～0.3 mm per pixel.

- Intelligent Exposure Control

The camera supports automatic gain and exposure adjustment, adapting to challenging lighting conditions ranging from dark surfaces to highly reflective areas, and greatly reducing manual parameter tuning.

- Wide Frame Rate Range

With a frame rate of 30～250 fps, it supports continuous shooting and stable image capture during steel coil movement.

- Diversified Interface Options

Multiple interfaces including CXP, Camera Link, USB3.0 and GigE are available, enabling easy integration into inspection systems with different hardware architectures.

---

Automating steel coil end-face inspection and code recognition does far more than replace manual inspection. It transforms traditional coil quality inspection - which is experience‑driven, high‑risk, inefficient and lacking traceability - into a standardized, quantifiable, fully recorded, stable and reliable inspection process.

Combined with appropriate lighting, software, and system design provided by solution partners and integrators, *JAI cameras* can serve as the imaging foundation for automated steel coil inspection applications.
