New 4K bilinear and monochrome line scan cameras!

Written by JAI | March 11, 2025

We are expanding our Sweep Series with four new bilinear and monochrome camera models!

Following the recently launched 2K trilinear and monochrome models, these new cameras feature a 4096-pixel (4K) resolution on a 14.3 mm-wide sensor with a 3.5 µm x 3.5 µm pixel size. Both models deliver high scan rates, with the bilinear models reaching up to 42 kHz and the monochrome models achieving up to 84 kHz.

Bilinear Sensor Design

The integrated sensor in the 4k Sweep Line Scan cameras delivers exceptional precision and RGB colors, utilizing full-resolution green and alternating blue and red pixels in two parallel lines.

Minimal Spatial Compensation ensures seamless integration, while Binning on FPGA enhances sensitivity for superior imaging.

This specialized binning technique enhances image quality by combining adjacent pixels to amplify signal strength, ideal for low-light conditions or high-speed imaging.

The new 4K Sweep Series models use a bi-linear image sensor with no space between the lines, minimizing the need for keystone and spatial compensation. Furthermore, the cameras interpolate adjacent pixels to provide full-resolution color channels.

A great choice of interfaces

The cameras are available with both 5GigE—offering high bandwidth for faster data transfer—and CoaXPress (CXP-6)—providing high bandwidth and low latency for rapid, real-time processing—interfaces, making them easy to integrate into existing setups. Their compact size further facilitates integration, with the 5GigE models measuring 44mm x 44mm x 64mm, and the slightly smaller CXP-6 models measuring 44mm x 44mm x 54mm.

Flexible Lens Selection with Standard C-Mount Support

Due to its compact 14.3 mm sensor width, the cameras are supporting C-Mount lenses—one of the most commonly used lens types in machine vision. This compatibility ensures an easy lens selection process, eliminating concerns about compatibility during system setup. Any 1” C-Mount lens with sufficient resolving power can be used, offering flexibility for various imaging applications.

Advanced Imaging Capabilities
Designed to meet the demands of dynamic production environments, the new Sweep 2K cameras come with several advanced features:

  • Resume Scanning Function: ensures uninterrupted data acquisition in dynamic production environments. For this functionality to operate seamlessly, the camera must either be linked to a two-phase encoder or receive clear directional signals for scanning. During acquisition, if the object halts unexpectedly, triggers are counted as the object reverses direction. Once the object returns to its previous position, the camera automatically resumes capturing images from where it left off. This algorithm helps avoiding lost lines during image acquisition by maintaining continuous data flow and operational efficiency.
  • ImageOutputDelay: Allows vision system designers to set trigger delays based on specific trigger counts rather than fixed timing. This flexibility ensures that if the speed of the conveyor changes, the real-time delay dynamically adjusts, allowing the camera to capture images at the optimal moment regardless of the actual speed, based on encoder input.
  • Trigger Controlled Exposure Time: offers a straightforward method for executing applications such as “bright field” inspection, creating HDR (High Dynamic Range) images, or synchronizing with individual colored LED lights (RGB). When the camera receives a trigger signal that goes high, it begins exposing the image sensor, and exposure continues until the trigger signal returns low.

Alongside these advanced capabilities, the cameras include additional features such as selectable output formats (8, 10, 12 bit), master and individual gain mode, Look Up Tables (LUT), Color Space Conversion, Tilted view correction (Key Stone correction), Horizontal pixel binning, and more.

Designed for a wide range of vision inspection applications
Engineered for outstanding spatial resolution, these cameras are ideal for applications demanding precision and fine detail detection, such as:

Battery inspection - Detecting defects in batteries, such as micro-cracks, scratches, surface irregularities, and misalignments, is critical to ensuring quality and performance. The new Sweep 4K bilinear and monochrome models are well-suited for this application due to their ability to capture fine details in battery components such as electrodes, separators, and casings. Additionally, these cameras are particularly effective for inspecting complex surfaces or materials with varying reflective or emissive properties.

Food Sorting - Sweep 4K models are highly effective in detecting subtle color variations, making them ideal for food sorting applications, including produce and grain sorting. They help differentiate items based on quality factors such as ripeness, defects, or contamination—for example, distinguishing between properly ripened fruits or identifying discolored grains. Their compact design allows for seamless integration into existing sorting systems, while high-speed 5GigE and CoaXPress interfaces ensure fast data transfer, enabling real-time processing with minimal latency.

Logistics/Postal sorting - Logistics centers handle an enormous variety of items, including oddly shaped parcels, irregular packaging, and fragile goods. In postal sorting and warehousing, accurate scanning of barcodes or QR codes is crucial for identifying packages.
The Sweep 4k line scan cameras can handle the variability in parcel shapes, packaging, and materials, ensuring accurate sorting despite these challenges. The sharp imaging capabilities allow for clearer barcode and label recognition, even from damaged or poorly printed labels. This is particularly beneficial in postal sorting, where clear identification is crucial for timely deliveries.

Other flexible/rigid inspection applications - When we mention flexible or rigid inspection, we are referring to the inspection of materials such as textiles, paper, films, sheet metal, or wood. These applications operate at extremely high speeds and typically require simultaneous inspection on both sides.
JAI’s Sweep 4K line scan cameras are well-suited for these applications, not only because of their affordability and reliability, but also because of their high resolution, speed, and easy integration.

Recycling and Waste sorting - Efficient recycling depends on accurately and quickly distinguishing between different materials. JAI’s Sweep 4K models combine high resolution, fast line rates, and reliable data handling to deliver precise, real-time identification of materials for recycling and waste sorting.
